The logistical problem on 2 August 2027 is not watching the eclipse: it is being inside the path by 10:45:17. Totality lasts minutes and does not wait. Everything below is designed to keep you out of a traffic jam.
The night-before rule#
Sleep inside the path on the night of 1–2 August. It is the only way not to depend on traffic. The 2017 and 2024 US eclipses produced multi-hour jams on back roads that are normally empty, and some people watched totality from the hard shoulder because they did not make it. The effect here could be worse, since parts of the path are coastline with a single access road.
Getting to Ceuta#
- The ferry from Algeciras is the real way in, and its capacity is fixed. Book the moment sailings for those dates go on sale, and assume the morning crossings on the 2nd will be the first to sell out.
- Cross as a foot passenger rather than with a vehicle if you can: car spaces sell out far earlier, and Ceuta is a small city you can cover on foot or by local bus.
- Book the return as well. On the afternoon of 2 August everyone will try to leave at once and there is no improvising with a boat.
- The helicopter service to the mainland exists and has very few seats: it is a fallback if the ferry is full, not a main plan. Check it is still operating before relying on it.
- Arriving from Morocco means the Tarajal crossing. Check before travelling that it is open and on what terms, and expect slower controls than usual that weekend.
- Morocco is an hour behind Spain in August. If you are crossing from Tetouan or Tangier, double-check which clock your timings are in.
The bottleneck is not traffic, it is the sea
Moving around on the day#
- Choose your viewing spot in advance, plus a backup less than twenty minutes away in case cloud sits over the first one.
- Arrive at least two hours before totality begins.
- Expect mobile coverage to degrade: tens of thousands of people in one area saturate the network. Download maps and timings offline.
- Bring water and shade. It is August in southern Spain and the wait is in full sun.
- Fill the tank the day before. Petrol stations inside the path will run dry.
- Do not stop on a motorway hard shoulder to look. It is dangerous and it is the classic cause of eclipse-day accidents.
The journey out is worse than the journey in
